Science Themes: Old & New

February was SUCH a busy month with many major events:  the 100th day of school, Valentine's Day, a Superkids dress up day, and a trip to KVR!  With all of this going on, its been hard for me to keep up with my blog posts.  I apologize and I will try to do a better job in March!

During the month of February, our Kindergarten/First Grade Multi-age Theme Groups were busy learning about different animal groups and how animals are classified.  The "Frogs" spent their time with me, while "Turtles" learned with Ms. G.  (You'll have to ask your Kindergartner which group they are in)  Below are some pictures of both Kindergartners and 1st Graders that worked in my room researching and recording characteristics that each animal group has and drawing pictures of animals that belong to each group to create their own animal book.

Monday was our last day working on classifying animals.  Today, we started our new theme:  Dinosaurs!  The children learned about Paleontologists who study dinosaurs and then they got to practice carefully extracting "fossils" (chocolate chips) from their cookies using "tools" (toothpicks and paintbrushes) just like a Paleontologist would do when recovering fossils that have been buried for thousands of years!

I think Ashley certainly has the skills and patience for the job!

Read Across America Week

This is "Read Across America Week" in honor of Dr. Seuss's Birthday.  To celebrate, our librarian and Title I teachers have worked together to organize some school wide reading fun!  Yesterday was hat day so the students got to "Grab a hat & read with the cat." Friday we will have a mystery guest reader, and we will enjoy some Birthday Cake and while watching Reader's Theater performance put on by the 5th graders.

Thursday, author, singer and songwriter STUART STOTTS is visiting our school!  We've invited families to school for this special even and to enjoy a Seussy Themed Snack afterward :)
Click here to visit his website.

This package came for us today!

Inside was a very fitting book for Mrs. HORTON's Kindergarten :) ...

...some related activity pages...

....and some yummy treats!

Kindergartners are SUPERKIDS!

Yes...my kindergartners really  are "Super Kids" in the traditional sense.  But, today they got to be a SUPERKID character from our reading series!
Here some pictures of their adorable and creative costumes!

Sal
He is a sports fan and he wears a red shirt with a star on it.
Edgar and Gavin made their own "Sal" shirts while Ryan and Gage wore their favorite "Sports Shirts".

Golly
He is a dog that lives at Gus & Gert's Big "G" Gas Station.
Kylynn, Aaron, Gabe, and Gracie all came to school dressed as Golly!

Hot Rod
He loves things with wheels and dreams of becoming a race car driver.
He wears an orange racing jacket and a helmet.
Aydan and Owen are pretending to be Hot Rod.

Lily
Lily loves her Lion Dolls.  She also wears a locket with the letter "L" on it.
Kirsten brought her own lion doll and  made a locket so that she could be Lily today!

Icky
Icky loves to watch T.V. to learn new things. He wears a red and blue striped shirt.
Hunter has a shirt that looks just like Icky's, while Evan and Angie wore shirts with some of their favorite T.V. characters on them!

Alf
Alf loves adventures!  He wears a hat and carries a backpack.  In our stories about Alf, we learned that he always has ants chasing after him.  Trevor came to school with this creative representation of Alf.  He has a hat, a backpack, a camera, and many objects that start with "A" attached to his costume, including an alligator on his hat, applesauce in his backpack, and an ant in his pocket!

Tic
Tic is one of the girls in the "Trio" of friends that taught us all about letter "T".
Ashlee has pigtails just like Tic.

Ettabetta
She loves puzzles and riddles.  She wears a blue dress, glasses and has a blue bow in her hair.
Emily, Emma, Kindale, Kaidren and I all wore glasses and bows just like she does!

Thank you, parents, for helping your "SUPERKIDS" come up with these SUPER costumes!

Celebrating 100 Days of Learning and Fun

Today we celebrated the 100th day of school!
I gave the Kindergartners a fun homework assignment, that allowed for lots of creativity!
Thanks to the all of the parents for helping the kids come up with these great
100 day outfits

Even I completed this homework assignment!  It certainly took a while to hot-glue all those wiggly eyes on...and I only burned my finger once!  Hopefully, the kids' projects weren't as painful as mine :)

About The Teacher

My name is Heather Horton. This is my 5th year teaching at LaFarge Public Schools. I taught two years of Four-Year-Old Kindergarten & Early Childhood Special Education, followed by two years teaching Kindergarten. I am married and have a gorgeous little girl, who will turn two in January. We are expecting our second child at the end of September. I live next door to my parents, about forty minutes from LaFarge. The long commute is totally worth it! Not only do I get to see my family whenever I want, I also get to teach in a wonderful, supportive community with amazing children, families & co-workers!
